FINA: REMEMBERING THE BYRD’S NEST

BUSENFREUND*INNEN // BOSOM BUDDIES:
PRIDE MONTH SPECIAL PART III.

The Byrd’s Nest was a small place, only four or five tables, with the menu written out on a chalkboard on one wall. After the summer term ended, I went there a couple of times a week. It was on Chrwys Road, somewhere between the library and the pharmacy where I picked up my Sertraline. I would go in for breakfast (I couldn’t sleep in anyway), and stay until things got busy around lunch time.
On those mornings, I packed my sister’s old outdoor backpack: a water bottle, two to three notebooks, my pencil case, and whichever Thursday Next novel I was reading at the time. Stuff a cardigan on top of that, put on hiking boots and a rain jacket, and off I went. Down Whitchurch Road, past the cemetery and three bus stops, right up to the café and its light grey façade.
It didn’t take long for the people working there to know me and my order – American Breakfast with extra bacon, and a latte later on when I’d start writing. There was a table near one of the bay windows, perfect for looking out and watching passers-by.
The Byrd’s Nest ist mittlerweile geschlossen.

With my book propped open against the sugar bowl, I made my way through fluffy pancakes, bacon, and maple syrup. I let myself fall down The Well of Lost Plots to hang out with Miss Havisham and the Cheshire cat, who is an excellent librarian, in case you didn’t know. It’s a bit of a stereotype, but I never felt lonely sitting there by myself. More than anything, this place was safe. I liked the music and I liked the staff, and Jasper Fforde’s books gave me a new fictional home. I’d finish my breakfast and get my coffee. I never started writing right away. I would continue reading, until the caffeine began to buzz and sharpen my thoughts. Get some words down on paper, write a draft. Read your book of prose prompts and turn them into poems. This didn’t go too well. But it was the repetition that counted – the same breakfast, the same chairs, the coffee always good and the music never too loud. A place that was utterly dependable.
The Byrd’s Nest is closed now. The owners will have packed up the tables and chairs, manoeuvred the squashed leather sofa sideways out the door. They’ll have wiped the chalk board and lifted it off its hook. Turned off the speakers, locked the door. How strange to say goodbye all over again.
